Montsoreau sits on the south bank of the river Loire 3.5km west of Candes-Saint-Martin on the border of Anjou & Touraine. Both villages are listed as 'Les-Plus-Beaux-Villages-de-France'
The village grew up around its port which at its peak was one of the busiest on the Loire. Now it is a tranquil place used purely for pleasure.
As much of the village is built into the cliff face the marked walks around the village offer many opportunities to check out some troglodyte dwellings.
They are also a delight in summer when the hollyhocks come into their own.
The imposing chateau overlooking the river Loire is now home to a contemporary art museum.
There is also a pretty little church to explore
