On a non-market day the Place du Marché aux Fleurs in Loches feels almost suspended in time, wide open cobbles, long shadows from the trees and just the soft echo of footsteps where the stalls usually stand.

Tuesday for towns in the Loire Valley - Villandry
The small village of Villandry which sits on the banks of the river Cher 20km west of Tours plays second fiddle the chateau and its gardens. The villages population of just over 1000 swells during the tourist season to accommodate the 300,000 visitors to the chateau.
There are restaurants and accommodation in the village but it never feels crowded perhaps because the coachloads of sightseers are whisked away to view another one of the regions mighty chateau.
It has an interesting church - Saint Etienne with some frescoes but it is not always open!
As we have said visitors mainly come for the chateau, not the village but it is worth a walk aound!

Beaulieu-lès-Loches...a quiet charm.
The waters of the Indre slip quietly through Beaulieu-lès-Loches, reflecting old stone houses that seem to lean gently towards the riverbanks. Founded around a powerful abbey in the 11th century, Beaulieu developed separately from neighbouring Loches despite centuries of shared history.
This view over one of the smaller channels of the Indre captures the calmer side of the town, where water once powered mills and shaped daily life. On bright spring days like this, the reflections and pale tuffeau stone give Beaulieu much of its quiet charm.

Towns & Villages - Boussay in Southern Touraine

Today we pause in Boussay, a southern Touraine village whose stillness could be from any moment in the past century. Stone houses, gentle lanes and rooftops that curve softly. this is the Tourainie at its most timeless.
In Boussay, history is not declared; it is simply lived. The old stone walls and narrow streets carry the easy calm that defines this part of the Loire Valley.

Taking in the view from the bridge in Amboise — one of the most rewarding moments when exploring the Loire Valley.
There’s nothing quite like pausing mid-ride, leaning your bike against the stone parapet, and simply soaking in the scenery. With the grand Château d'Amboise rising majestically on the high ground across the Loire River, it feels like the perfect postcard of the Loire Valley.
This charming town, with its Renaissance castle, winding streets and riverfront setting, has long been a favourite stop for cyclists and travellers alike. Leonardo da Vinci spent his final years nearby at Clos Lucé, and the town still carries that rich historical atmosphere.
On a beautiful day like this, with touring bikes loaded and ready, it’s a gentle reminder of why slow travel through the Loire Valley is so special, the freedom to stop, breathe and fully appreciate views like this one.
The Château d'Amboise was once a royal residence and the site where young Charles VIII and later Francis I held court. Today it offers one of the most photogenic silhouettes in the entire Loire Valley.

Towns & Villages of the Centre - Val de Loire – Gargilesse-Dampierre.
Perched above the Creuse valley, Gargilesse-Dampierre is one of those villages that seems to appear quietly, stone houses rising along the hillside and narrow lanes winding between old walls and gardens. It is listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, and it is easy to see why.
The village became closely linked with the writer George Sand, who spent many summers here in the 19th century and helped bring its quiet beauty to wider attention. Artists followed, drawn by the soft light and peaceful landscape, giving Gargilesse a long creative history that still lingers today.

Tuesday for towns and villages - Le Grand-Pressigny.
Looking out over the rooftops of Le Grand-Pressigny yesterday from the elevated grounds of its historic château.
The view is pure Touraine countryside harmony: a sea of dark slate and tiled roofs, the elegant spire of the church rising above the houses. The clear blue sky makes every detail pop, from the chimneys and dormer windows right in front of us to the tree-lined horizon far away.
This small town in the Indre-et-Loire department feels wonderfully timeless. Standing here on the château terrace gives you that wonderful sense of being gently above the everyday life of the village while still feeling part of it.
A personal eye-catcher: the way the church spire anchors the whole scene, drawing your eye naturally across the rooftops and into the peaceful landscape beyond.
Practical tip: Park near the château (free parking is available) and walk up to the terrace and gardens for this elevated viewpoint. The château itself is worth a visit too, it houses a fascinating prehistory museum. Combine it with a stroll through the narrow streets below for the full Le Grand-Pressigny experience.

Tuesday for Towns and Villages – Vendôme, the Little Venice on the Loir.

Reflections on the Loir... a gentle riverside stroll in a town full of medieval charm.
Today's town: Vendôme (Loir-et-Cher), often called the 'Little Venice' of the Loire Valley thanks to the multiple arms of the Loir River criss-crossing the historic center.
From this riverbank perspective, the view highlights the town's medieval heritage: the 12th-century tower and remnants of the old château walls perched on the hillside, overlooking stone houses with slate roofs, chimneys, and autumnal foliage. The Loir flows calmly below, bordered by quays, flower beds bursting with chrysanthemums and other blooms, and the quiet townscape—perfect for a peaceful walk or photo stop.
Vendôme is a classified 'Ville d'Art et d'Histoire' with a rich past (from Gallic origins to counts of Vendôme, including César de Vendôme son of Henri IV). Key sights nearby include the Flamboyant Gothic Abbaye de la Trinité (with its stunning façade and cloister museum), the ruined Château de Vendôme (panoramic terrace views), Place Saint-Martin (with its carillon tower), and the Rochambeau district's half-timbered houses.
