Windows on Wednesday...Preuilly-sur-Claise.

Not every window needs grand stonework or wrought iron to catch the eye. In Preuilly-sur-Claise, sometimes it is the small personal touches that make a façade memorable, a pair of colourful butterflies, a simple balcony rail, and an open window letting the light and air of the day inside.

Perched above the Creuse valley, Gargilesse-Dampierre is one of those villages that seems to appear quietly, stone houses rising along the hillside and narrow lanes winding between old walls and gardens. It is listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, and it is easy to see why.

The village became closely linked with the writer George Sand, who spent many summers here in the 19th century and helped bring its quiet beauty to wider attention. Artists followed, drawn by the soft light and peaceful landscape, giving Gargilesse a long creative history that still lingers today.

The old quarter of Tours...

Stepping into Rue du Grand Marché in Tours feels like walking straight into a postcard of medieval France.

Monday's chateau - Château de Valençay.

Under a bright blue sky dotted with fluffy clouds, the elegant silhouette of Château de Valençay rises proudly above its serene pond and manicured gardens. With its harmonious blend of Renaissance architecture, classical details, and the striking black dome, this château is one of the hidden gems of the Loire Valley region, often compared to its more famous neighbors like Chenonceau or Chambord.

Originally built in the 16th century by the d’Estampes family, Valençay became world-famous when Napoleon instructed his foreign minister, Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand, to purchase it in 1803 as a grand residence for receiving diplomats. Talleyrand hosted lavish parties here, and the château even served as a (rather comfortable) residence for the deposed King of Spain and his family during the Napoleonic era.

Today, the 53-hectare park, the impressive interiors with Empire furniture, and the peaceful setting overlooking the Nahon valley make it a perfect day trip from Tours, Blois or Bourges.

• The charming town of Valençay with its local goat cheese (AOC Valençay)
• Other Loire Valley châteaux: Cheverny, Blois, Chaumont
