A chateau with two architectural faces - Meung-sur-Loire

 The original fortress was built for the bishops of Orléans, with the surviving medieval structure dating largely from the 13th century. Then, centuries later, the bishops transformed it into a much more comfortable residence. In the 18th century, Fleuriau d’Armonville added the grand façade and major extensions, followed later by a chapel and vestibule. The result is the rather striking contrast seen here: 18th-century château designed for more civilised living, joined to a medieval fortress with its defensive towers.

Best bench view at Château de Chambord.

From here the grounds of Chateau de Chambord feel almost private. The famous forest of chimneys stand in the distance while this simple wooden bench offers the best seat in the house. The light moves slowly across the façade and for a moment the vast royal hunting lodge feels less like a monument and more like a quiet companion for anyone willing to sit and simply look.

Monday's chateau - Véretz

In the quiet morning light at Véretz, it is easy to forget that this elegant château began life as a fortified medieval stronghold. Behind the pointed towers and romantic façade lies a far older story, one tied to conflict, religion and the shifting fortunes of France itself.

The original fortress was transformed during the Renaissance into a refined residence, and local tradition even claims that the Edict of Nantes may have been drafted within its walls before Henri IV granted limited religious freedom to French Protestants in 1598. Like many aristocratic properties, the château suffered heavily during the French Revolution and was largely dismantled.

What stands today dates mainly from 1836, when the château was rebuilt in the fashionable neo-Renaissance style seen here, blending historical inspiration with 19th-century romanticism. Still privately owned, it remains one of those lesser-known Loire Valley residences that quietly carry centuries of history behind their gates.

Taken in Touraine...winter scene at Le Grand-Pressigny.

From a quiet path on the edge of Le Grand-Pressigny, the village opens toward its remarkable centrepiece, the château and the Prehistory Museum. Soft December light settles across the rooftops, the tall poplars, and the limestone walls, giving the whole scene a gentle winter warmth.

The museum building, with its contemporary extension, sits alongside the medieval keep and the Renaissance wing in a striking blend of past and present that defines this part of Touraine so beautifully.
