Châteaux: Château d'Azay-le-Rideau – Renaissance Façade

Constructed 1518–1527 by Gilles Berthelot (who fled after embezzlement charges in 1527), the château was seized by François I and given to Antoine Raffin. Balzac described it as "a faceted diamond set in the Indre." The site has medieval roots (Azay-le-Brûlé after a 1418 burning), but the current building is a jewel of early French Renaissance. Managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux, with elegant interiors and grounds.

Monday's chateau - the castle of Palluau-sur-Indre

This imposing castle overlooking the Indre valley (36) dates from the 12th to the 15th century when it was restored after having suffered from the fighting of the Hundred Years War. Once the home of the first governor of Quebec, Louis de Buade de Frontenac, Count of Palluau, it is now in private hands under a continuing restoration programme.

Monday's chateau - Château de Chambord.

Château de Chambord stands like a Renaissance dream set loose on the plains of  Centre - Val de Loire.
Its forest of towers, chimneys, and lanterns rises in perfect symmetry, at once regal and fantastical, a palace built to impress both the eye and the imagination.

Conceived under François I, Chambord was never meant to be a simple residence. It was a statement of power, ambition, and artistic daring, blending medieval fortress forms with the new ideas of the Renaissance. Even today, it feels less like a building and more like a vision made of stone.

Monday's Loire Valley chateau... Apremont-sur-Allier,

Perched above the village of Apremont-sur-Allier, this château combines medieval defensive elements with later refinements. Round towers, high walls, and a commanding position over the surrounding landscape reflect its strategic origins, while the setting today feels calm and carefully preserved.

Below, the village, one of  'Les-Plus-Beaux-Villages-de-France' sits quietly by the river. Together, château and village form a quietly memorable Loire Valley scene.

Monday's Loire Valley chateau — Chateau d'Amboise...looking up!

Standing on Rue de la Concorde in Amboise, the château rises above you like a carved stone cliff. Layers of history stack upward, defensive walls, elegant Renaissance windows and a skyline of spires shaped by centuries of kings and architects.

From this angle, the building feels almost weightless despite its size, the details unfolding only as you look higher. A reminder that in the Loire, even familiar landmarks can feel different when seen from below.

Château d’Azay-le-Rideau...night and day.

Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, one of the Loire’s most elegant Renaissance masterpieces.

At the heart of the Loire Valley stands Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, a perfect blend of French Renaissance harmony and quiet grandeur. Its pale stone, delicately carved windows, and pointed towers give it the air of a château that was designed more to be admired than defended.

Built on an island in the Indre River, Azay-le-Rideau is often known for its mirror-like water reflections but approaching it from the front reveals just how refined and balanced its architecture truly is. A château of symmetry, softness, and understated beauty night or day.

Monday's chateau...Chateau de Chaumont-sur-Loire,

The Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire was looking resplendent last week as we explored its annual International Garden Festival, which this year embraces the theme 'Once Upon a Time in the Garden'.

Monday's chateau...Chateau de Chenonceau

 We loved discovering this beautiful painting of the Château de Chenonceau by Emmanuel Lansyer, it really captures the elegance of the castle and the mood of the Loire Valley. You can see it in Loches, at the Musée Lansyer, a small, charming museum dedicated to the artist’s work, set in his former home. It’s a quiet spot, often overlooked by tourists but well worth a visit if you’re exploring the region.

Monday's chateau...Royal Lodgings,Loches

As you walk along the terrace of the Royal Lodgings in Loches, you can’t help but marvel at the weight of history beneath your feet. This very terrace would have once echoed with the footsteps of some of the most notable figures of French history. Joan of Arc passed through these royal lodgings after her pivotal meeting with Charles VII. Agnès Sorel, the king’s beloved mistress and a symbol of early Renaissance influence, made it her home. Even Anne of Brittany, twice Queen of France, found herself within these walls. From the terrace, the sweeping views over the Indre valley haven’t changed much since their time, offering you much the same views they once paused to admire.
