Château de La Guerche - who knew?

Château de La Guerche has,apparently, strong connections with Agnès Sorel, the celebrated favourite of Charles VII. Agnès is traditionally said to have been born at Fromenteau, now in the commune of Chambon, just a few kilometres away. She also had family connections with the Villequier family who built La Guerche, making this part of Touraine particularly important in her story.

On the bridge at La Guerche for an anti-climax.

Waited with others on the bridge in La Guerche to watch the lunar  eclipse last night and although we caught a glimpse through the special glasses it was a little underwhelming from visual point of view we had some dimming rather than the darkness people imagined....the clouds didn't help either!

Terraced gardens, La Guerche.

There’s a particular kind of quiet that settles over the terraced gardens of La Guerche. The stone walls hold the day’s heat, the leaves on the banana tree that still grows, improbably green, barely move. 

Not much has changed here over the years with the only real sign of modernity being the 'dish' on the roof!

On the Streets of Touraine: Rue du Four Banal, La Guerche.

Rue du Four Banal runs through La Guerche in Southern Touraine from where you enter the village from the D750 road until you reach the bridge over the river Creuse when it become Route du Pont.

As you approach the bridge the street features a half-timbered house along with tuffeau stone facades on one side and the chateau on the other.

This is a fairly typical small-town street in Touraine, although they do not all have a chateau, with a name recalls the communal bread oven (four banal) that once served the village.

A reminder: Touraine streets are often best when they stay simple, a short walk, a few old houses, and the quiet life of the village.

Monday's chateau - Château de la Guerche.

As the sun dips low over Southern Touraine, the sky ignites in soft pinks and oranges behind the sturdy 15th-century towers of Château de la Guerche. Perched on the banks of the Creuse, this fortified gem, built during Charles VII's reign and later restored, stands timeless against the twilight, its conical roofs and stone walls catching the last warm glow.

A quiet, magical close to the day in the heart of Southern Touraine.

Today we feature the charming little village of La Guerche in Southern Touraine which is dominated by its mighty chateau sitting on the banks of the river Creuse.

A wander around the village however, reveals that there is a little more to this village than first meets the eye.
