Terraced gardens, La Guerche.

Terraced gardens in La Guerche with a clear blue sky as a backdrop

There’s a particular kind of quiet that settles over the terraced gardens of La Guerche. The stone walls hold the day’s heat, the leaves on the banana tree that still grows, improbably green, barely move.

Not much has changed here over the years with the only real sign of modernity being the 'dish' on the roof!

Apremont-sur-Allier in Centre-Val de Loire.

Traditional stone houses lining the main street in Apremont-sur-Allier, a historic village in the Cher department of the Loire Valley.

Apremont-sur-Allier sits at the far south-eastern edge of the Cher department, almost where the Centre-Val de Loire region gives way to Burgundy. It's a place that many visitors pass by without realising they've reached one of the Loire Valley's most distinctive villages.

The quiet streets are lined with warm local stone, steeply pitched roofs and carefully restored houses that create a remarkably harmonious streetscape. It's an easy village to explore on foot, with each turn revealing another attractive corner.

Although Apremont-sur-Allier has medieval origins, much of the village's remarkably consistent appearance is the result of a restoration programme led by Eugène Schneider during the early 20th century. Rather than allowing the village to develop piecemeal, he carefully restored and remodelled many of the buildings to create the unified character visitors enjoy today.

Apremont-sur-Allier's floral gardens with a colourful mix of shrubs and flowers

Although often associated with neighbouring Burgundy, Apremont-sur-Allier actually lies within the Cher department, just inside the Centre-Val de Loire region. It sits on the region's south-eastern edge, making it one of the last villages before crossing into Burgundy.

Check out all previous blogposts on this village here.

Amboise a favourite stop for cyclists exploring the Loire Valley.

Touring bicycles parked on the bridge overlooking Château Royal d'Amboise and the River Loire in the historic town of Amboise, France.

Few towns capture the spirit of the Loire Valley as completely as Amboise. Dominated by its magnificent royal château and nestled beside the River Loire, it combines centuries of royal history with a relaxed riverside atmosphere that invites visitors to slow down and explore.

This view, taken from the bridge over the Loire, is a familiar sight for many cyclists following the famous La Loire à Vélo route. With bicycles resting against the bridge wall and the Château Royal d'Amboise rising above the town, it perfectly captures the freedom of discovering the Loire Valley on two wheels.

La Loire à Vélo is one of Europe's most celebrated cycling routes, stretching for over 900 kilometres (560 miles) from Cuffy, near Nevers, to the Atlantic coast at Saint-Brevin-les-Pins. The route passes through some of the Loire Valley's finest towns and châteaux, with Amboise being one of its most popular overnight stops. Cyclists can explore the royal château, visit Clos Lucé, where Leonardo da Vinci spent the last years of his life, before continuing their journey through the UNESCO-listed Loire landscape.

Monday's Château – Château de Beauregard

Front view of Château de Beauregard in the Loire Valley, showing its elegant Renaissance façade surrounded by lawns and parkland.

Standing gracefully in the heart of the Loire Valley, Château de Beauregard may not be the largest or most famous château in the region, but it possesses a charm all its own. Surrounded by peaceful parkland and formal gardens, its elegant Renaissance façade reflects the refinement that characterised the French court during the 16th century.

Located between Blois and Cheverny, Beauregard rewards visitors with a quieter experience than many of the Loire's better-known castles. Beyond its impressive exterior lies one of France's most remarkable historic interiors, making it a hidden treasure for anyone exploring the Loire Valley.

Château de Beauregard is renowned for its extraordinary Portrait Gallery (Galerie des Illustres), which contains 327 portraits of kings, queens, statesmen and influential figures from European history. Created during the 17th century, it stretches almost 26 metres and is one of the finest portrait galleries in France. Beneath the paintings, the beautiful floor is decorated with over 5,500 Delft tiles, adding another unique feature that visitors rarely expect to find.

Happy Monday in the Loire Valley!

“Each château tells a story — of kings, of artists, and of the dream of France itself.”

At Villandry - Mon Banc Dominical — My Sunday Bench

Wooden bench in the gardens of Château de Villandry at sunset, surrounded by trees, lawns and colourful planting in the Loire Valley.

There are benches that offer a place to rest, and there are benches that invite you to linger.

Nestled within the magnificent gardens of Château de Villandry, this wooden bench looks out over a landscape carefully shaped by centuries of horticultural artistry. Bathed in the soft glow of the evening sun, it offers a peaceful spot to pause and appreciate the beauty of one of the Loire Valley's most celebrated gardens.

Sometimes the finest way to experience Villandry is simply to sit quietly and let the garden reveal itself.

Every season brings a different display, ensuring no two visits are ever quite the same.

“On Sundays, the Loire Valley speaks softly — and you have time to listen.”

On the Streets of the Touraine - Rue Rabelais, Chinon.

Rue Rabelais in Chinon, France, showing cafés with outdoor seating, boutiques and traditional tuffeau stone buildings in the medieval town centre.

Tucked into the heart of medieval Chinon, Rue Rabelais is one of those inviting streets that encourages you to slow your pace. Lined with small boutiques and cafés, it offers a glimpse of the town's relaxed atmosphere and centuries of history.

Named after the great Renaissance writer François Rabelais, who was born nearby in La Devinière, the street reflects the spirit of a region where literature, history and fine food have long gone hand in hand. Whether you're browsing local shops, enjoying lunch on a terrace or simply wandering through the old town, Rue Rabelais is a reminder that Chinon's greatest pleasures are often found away from its famous fortress.

Although François Rabelais was born just outside Chinon around 1494, he affectionately celebrated the town and the surrounding countryside in his writings. His larger-than-life characters, Gargantua and Pantagruel, are filled with references to the Loire Valley's vineyards, food and humour, making Chinon forever linked with one of France's greatest literary figures.

“The streets here don’t hurry. They simply invite you to walk, to notice, to belong.”

Chateau du Rivau -Monday's chateau.

Château du Rivau viewed across its colourful gardens with white stone towers and landscaped grounds in the Loire Valley.

Rising above its colorful gardens, Château du Rivau is one of the Loire Valley's most enchanting castles. Its white tufa stone walls and slate-roofed towers reflect both its medieval origins and its elegant Renaissance transformation, while the remarkable gardens add a touch of fantasy to every visit.

Unlike many Loire châteaux, Le Rivau combines history with creativity. The formal gardens are filled with themed displays, contemporary sculptures and thousands of flowers, making each season a little different from the last. It's a castle where history and imagination sit comfortably side by side.

According to local tradition, Joan of Arc stopped at Château du Rivau in 1429 to collect fresh horses on her journey to Chinon, where she would meet the future King Charles VII before the campaign that led to the lifting of the siege of Orléans. Today, the château's celebrated fairy-tale gardens include more than a dozen themed spaces inspired by legends, literature and medieval stories.

Mon Banc Dominical / My Sunday Bench -some shade in Loches.

tone bench beneath a rose-covered pergola in the public gardens of Loches, surrounded by flowers and mature trees in the Loire Valley.

Tucked away in the public gardens of Loches, this simple stone bench rests beneath a rose-covered pergola, where cool shade offers a welcome retreat on a warm summer's day. Surrounded by climbing roses and mature trees, it's a peaceful place to pause and enjoy one of Touraine's quieter corners.

Unlike a wooden bench warmed by the sun, the cool stone seat remains inviting even in the heat of the afternoon. Here, the fragrance of roses, birdsong and the gentle rustle of leaves create a moment of calm just a short stroll from the historic Royal City of Loches.

The public gardens of Loches were laid out on land that once formed part of the town's defensive surroundings. Today they provide a peaceful contrast to the medieval fortress above. The rose pergola has become one of the garden's most photographed features, offering both colour in late spring and early summer and welcome shade for visitors exploring the town.

Mon banc dominical / My Sunday Bench - Cold comfort in Amboise.

Stone bench on Place Michel Debré in Amboise offering cold comfort on a winter's day

Stone bench on Place Michel Debré in the normally lively historic heart of Amboise, nestled right at the foot of the majestic Royal Château d'Amboise in the Loire Valley. The bench itself is simple, almost austere: solid, unadorned, built more for endurance than comfort. No backrest curves invitingly; no cushions soften the seat. It's the sort of perch that provides rest only because there's nothing else, cold comfort indeed, numbing the thighs after just a few minutes, reminding the sitter of their own vulnerability.

A quiet view looking down over Ligueil in Southern Touraine. Rooftops, a single church spire and a winter sky. Small towns of the Loire Valley rarely ask for attention, they reward it

This is Touraine at its most understated, familiar shapes, long views, and a sense of place shaped over centuries rather than moments.

“Villages don’t announce themselves. They wait to be noticed.”

Mon banc dominical — My Sunday Bench...Bléré

A quiet Sunday bench in Bléré — cold comfort beside the church

Bléré — cold comfort beside the church.

There are quiet corners in the Loire Valley where time seems to loosen its hold. A simple bench, a stone wall, a church tower — and suddenly the world feels softer, slower.

This bench in Bléré carries that kind of stillness. A place where footsteps echo lightly, where the air holds a chill you somehow don’t mind, and where sitting for a moment feels less like a pause and more like a small act of care.

“In the Loire, calm settles in the spaces we almost overlook.”

Bon week-end from the Loire Valley...a peaceful Chateau de Montresor.

Château de Montresor, Loire Valley, reflected in the still water as the village settles into the weekend.

It's Friday, we slow down here in the Loire Valley, where weekends arrive quietly, with soft light, calm water, and space to breathe.

In Montresor, a village often described as one of the most beautiful in France, the café fills gently, neighbours pause to talk and the first glasses of wine are poured as evening begins.

Here, bon week-end isn’t just a phrase, it’s a small ritual the region knows well.

“In the Loire, the weekend begins with light, and ends with gratitude.”

Thursday's 'taken in Touraine'...in Amboise.

Rue Victor Hugo, Amboise — an unusual façade with twin arched doorways.

Each post in this series highlights a detail from Touraine, a building, a lane, or a quiet corner that reveals something of the Loire region.

This image was taken in Amboise. The house’s paired arched doors and brick arches give it a character that stands out from the neighbouring façades.

Architectural surprises like this are small invitations to look more closely at the places we pass every day.

“In Touraine, every street has a story — some simply whisper a little louder.”

Simple festive balcony dressing in Tours.

Rue des Halles, Tours— a festive touch above the street.

On Rue des Halles, in Tours, this weathered window carries a simple decoration of evergreen and bright red bows. The soft paint, aged shutters, and quiet elegance feel unmistakably Loire Valley — a gentle mix of tradition and lived-in warmth.

“Some windows speak softly — offering a hint of life, colour, and the passing season.”

Château d’Azay-le-Rideau...night and day.

Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, one of the Loire’s most elegant Renaissance masterpieces.

At the heart of the Loire Valley stands Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, a perfect blend of French Renaissance harmony and quiet grandeur. Its pale stone, delicately carved windows, and pointed towers give it the air of a château that was designed more to be admired than defended.

Built on an island in the Indre River, Azay-le-Rideau is often known for its mirror-like water reflections but approaching it from the front reveals just how refined and balanced its architecture truly is. A château of symmetry, softness, and understated beauty night or day.

“Some châteaux impress with power, Azay-le-Rideau charms with elegance”

Place Jean-Jaurès, Tours — a quiet moment in the city.

In the heart of Tours, the benches of Place Jean-Jaurès offer a gentle pause. Even in the bustle of the Loire Valley's largest city, there are places where you can catch your breath.

This bench, surrounded by winter plantings and the calm geometry of the square, is a reminder that stillness can be found anywhere, even at the centre of a city.

“Sometimes all you need is a bench, a square, and a moment to breathe.”

Saturday on the streets of Touraine...Rue du Change, Tours.

Rue du Change in Tours with timber-framed medieval houses and a narrow cobbled street
Rue du Change, Tours — the charm of everyday Loire life.

November on Rue du Change in Tours, the half-timbered façades lean gently over the cobbles, as if keeping centuries of stories close and revealing that actually not much has changed.

In the morning, cafés set out their chairs and the old street slowly wakes. By afternoon, the light softens, slipping between slate roofs and timber frames.

“The streets here don’t hurry. They simply invite you to walk, to notice, to belong.”

Thursday's 'taken in Touraine'...Chateau d'Amboise, dressed for autumn.

Château d'Amboise framed by autumn trees, Touraine, Loire Valley

Château d'Amboise wears autumn well, warm stone set against a sky of soft cloud, the terraces and towers softened by the season’s palette.

The château sits like a memory made visible, turrets caught between late leaves and the light that turns every roof and garden into a study in amber. The town at its feet slowly gathers the day’s tasks while the château watches over the valley, patient and unchanged.

This is Touraine in slow motion, a landscape of history and the quiet costume of autumn.
