Windows & Balconies of the Loire: Inside Out at Château de Chambord.

Inside out at Château de Chambord. Usually we look through a window to see inside a building, but here the view works just as well in reverse. The leaded glass frames Chambord's formal French gardens, drawing the eye along the central axis towards the château's grounds.

The gardens themselves have a long history. Planned under Louis XIV, completed during the reign of Louis XV, and laid out in their 18th-century form in 1734, they eventually disappeared beneath simpler lawns. The formal gardens were restored and replanted in 2016–17, reopening to visitors in March 2017.

A rather good example of how, at Chambord, the view from a window can be as carefully composed as the view of the building itself.

Taken in Touraine - staying in Descartes.

Despite the recent difficult weather conditions, due to the diligent gardeners there, the flower beds in the public gardens in Descartes were looking remarkably good on Monday. The garden has a particularly varied planting scheme, including a rose garden in the old castle ditches, making it one of those places where the history is beneath your feet but the horticulture is very much of the present day.

Monday’s Château, Villandry.

Some châteaux impress with towers and scale, others with what surrounds them. At Villandry, the gardens are every bit as important as the château itself. Under a cloudless blue sky, the formal parterres stretch out in precise patterns. Beautiful to wander through, although on days like this the elegance comes with a warning, there is very little shade once you step into the gardens and summer heat can turn a leisurely visit into a warm one.

Villandry is often described as the final great Renaissance château built in the Loire Valley. Rather than defensive architecture, its lasting reputation rests on the ornamental gardens recreated in the early 20th century, now among the most recognisable in France.

Thursday's 'taken in Touraine'...Château du Rivau.

Part fairytale fortress, part Renaissance residence, the Château du Rivau rises somewhat unexpectedly from the Touraine countryside near the village of Lémeré.

Today the château is famous for its remarkable child friendly gardens, especially its roses. On the 6th and 7th of June, the annual Rose Festival returns, when the gardens are at their most colourful and fragrant, drawing visitors from across the Loire Valley and beyond.
