Tuesday for towns - staying in Carcassonne.

The 'modern' city of Carcassonne which contains 'La Bastide Saint-Louis' actually dates from 1247, it was created on the left bank of the river Aude to replace the one on the foothills of the medieval city. 

The 14th century bridge 'Pont Vieux' connects the old and 'new' cities.

It offers great photo opportunities as you look back on the medieval city.

Long narrow streets eventually lead you to it centre, Place Carnot.

Having crossed the 'La Bastide Saint-Louis' you arrive at the pleasant site of the port on the Canal de Midi which passes through the city as it makes its way south. So, visiting Carcassonne gives you two cities and a canal - well worth the stop-over! 

Monday's chateau - heading south...

Last week we took a road-trip out of the Loire Valley to take in a couple of visits that have been on our 'bucket list'. One of these was the medieval city of Carcassonne so this week is going to be devoted to this fascinating place.The imposing Chateau Comtal within the fortifications of the city rests on a rocky outcrop overlooking the river Aude. The castle was built in the 13th century by the Trencavels, viscounts of Carcassonne, and was constantly modified over the following centuries.  

The castle, rectangular in shape, is separated from the city by a deep moat and defended by two barbicans, one facing the city and the other looking out over the river Aude. 

The castle and its ramparts have been much restored over the centuries to give it back its 13th century origins and is an impressive piece of work and great to walk around. There is a good visual projection room inside that shows how it sits within the city walls.
