Monday's chateau...Chateau de La Celle-Guenand

Today's image is of the 15th/17th century Chateau de La Celle-Guenand nestling in the small village of the same name in Southern Touraine. This, now private chateau, is the former ancestral home of the baronies of Preuilly and Sainte-Maure.

Tuesday for towns in the Loire Valley - Montsoreau

Montsoreau sits on the south bank of the river Loire 3.5km west of Candes-Saint-Martin on the border of Anjou & Touraine. Both villages are listed as 'Les-Plus-Beaux-Villages-de-France'

The village grew up around its port which at its peak was one of the busiest on the Loire. Now it is a tranquil place used purely for pleasure.

As much of the village is built into the cliff face  the marked walks around the village offer many opportunities to check out some troglodyte dwellings.

They are also a delight in summer when the hollyhocks come into their own.

The imposing chateau overlooking the river Loire is now home to a contemporary art museum.

There is also a pretty little church to explore

Monday's Loire Valley chateau - Château de la Vignole

At the heart of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Nature Park, in Souzay-Champigny, Château de la Vignole clings to the cliff face on the banks of the Loire river. This 17th century semi-troglodyte  tufa-style mansion's claim to fame was that, along with other properties nearby, was placed at the disposal of Marguerite d'Anjou, daughter of King Rene and Queen of England (by marriage to King Henry VI from 1445 to 1461 and again from 1470 to 1471) after being exiled to France.

The castle is known locally as "château de Marguerite d'Anjou" but this is due more to the imagination of romantic authors and less to facts. It was actually at nearby 'Morains Manor' in Dampierre-sur-Loire that the "most unhappy of wives and mothers" lived until her death in 1482.

The 'chateau' is now a private hotel with what looks like a stunning pool!

A church for Sunday - Notre-Dame de Rivière

A favourite church of our's here in the Loire Valley is the delightful, 'Notre-Dame' in the village of Rivière, 10 minutes south east of Chinon. Its unimposing exterior belies its extravagant interior.
