Mon banc dominical / My Sunday Bench - could be standing-room only at Chedigny today.

green bench in Chedigny surrounded by lovely plantings
Not sure you will get near this bench today as it's the second day of the  annual rose festival at Chedigny and it is very popular.

Thursday's 'taken in Touraine'...Château du Rivau.

Château du Rivau in Touraine surrounded by trees and gardens beneath a bright blue summer sky in the Loire Valley.Part fairytale fortress, part Renaissance residence, the Château du Rivau rises somewhat unexpectedly from the Touraine countryside near the village of Lémeré.

Today the château is famous for its remarkable child friendly gardens, especially its roses. On the 6th and 7th of June, the annual Rose Festival returns, when the gardens are at their most colourful and fragrant, drawing visitors from across the Loire Valley and beyond.

A visit back in 2022...

“In Touraine, even the silence tells a story.”

Bloomingly beautiful !

Climbing roses frame this quiet window in Le Grand-Pressigny, with the roses almost determined to take over the façade completely, capturing the timeless charm of village life in the Loire Valley.

In villages across Touraine, roses have long been planted against tuffeau walls where the pale stone reflects warmth back onto the plants. By late spring, windows like this become part cottage garden, part living decoration.

These are the scenes I look forward to sharing every Wednesday.

Beaulieu-lès-Loches...a quiet charm.

View over a small stream of the Indre River in Beaulieu-lès-Loches with old stone houses, reflections in calm water and bright blue skies crossed by white cloud trails.

The waters of the Indre slip quietly through Beaulieu-lès-Loches, reflecting old stone houses that seem to lean gently towards the riverbanks. Founded around a powerful abbey in the 11th century, Beaulieu developed separately from neighbouring Loches despite centuries of shared history.

This view over one of the smaller channels of the Indre captures the calmer side of the town, where water once powered mills and shaped daily life. On bright spring days like this, the reflections and pale tuffeau stone give Beaulieu much of its quiet charm.

“Some towns in Touraine speak softly — Beaulieu-lès-Loches is one of them.”

Monday's chateau - Véretz

Romantic château in Véretz, Touraine, with pointed towers and pale stone façade beside dew-covered lawns beneath a clear blue morning sky.

In the quiet morning light at Véretz, it is easy to forget that this elegant château began life as a fortified medieval stronghold. Behind the pointed towers and romantic façade lies a far older story, one tied to conflict, religion and the shifting fortunes of France itself.

The original fortress was transformed during the Renaissance into a refined residence, and local tradition even claims that the Edict of Nantes may have been drafted within its walls before Henri IV granted limited religious freedom to French Protestants in 1598. Like many aristocratic properties, the château suffered heavily during the French Revolution and was largely dismantled.

What stands today dates mainly from 1836, when the château was rebuilt in the fashionable neo-Renaissance style seen here, blending historical inspiration with 19th-century romanticism. Still privately owned, it remains one of those lesser-known Loire Valley residences that quietly carry centuries of history behind their gates.

Bon lundi dans la vallée de la Cher !

On the streets of Touraine - in Azay-le-Rideau

A lovely morning on Rue du Château in Azay-le-Rideau, where flower baskets, souvenir shops, and quiet storefronts lead visitors toward one of the Loire Valley’s most celebrated châteaux
Streets like this still carry the easy pace of a town shaped by tourism, local life and centuries of history along the Indre River.

Bon samedi dans la Touraine !

Bon week-end - have a good weekend everyone...enjoy the sun.

As temperatures rise across the Loire Valley this weekend, the shaded streets of Chinon will become even more inviting. Beneath the timber-framed façades and old stone buildings, café terraces offer welcome shelter from the afternoon sun while visitors wander through the quieter lanes of the historic town.

In places like this, Chinon still feels wonderfully unhurried. A table in the shade, a cool drink and the slow pace of life in the old quarter remain some of the simplest pleasures of a sunny weekend in Touraine.

Taken in Touraine - river Indre at Loches.

River Indre flowing through Loches viewed from the Porte des Cordeliers with trees, old stone buildings, and reflections on the water in Touraine.

Seen from the Porte des Cordeliers in Loches, the River Indre moves quietly beneath the trees and old stone houses that line its banks. On warm days, the reflections soften the edges of the town, creating a calmer view far removed from the busy streets on market day.

This part of Loches reveals another side of Touraine, where water, greenery, and centuries-old buildings blend naturally into the landscape. Hidden corners like this are easy to miss, yet they often become the moments visitors remember most clearly after exploring the town.

Wednesday for windows - pretty in Loches.

Charming stone facade windows with climbing roses on Chemin de la Prairie de la Foire, Loches.

On the way to the gates into Loches’ public gardens, this graceful stone facade on Chemin de la Prairie de la Foire offers one of those perfect little moments the Loire Valley does so well.

The soft colours of the roses against the weathered walls and pale blue shutters make it easy to pause and simply admire the details. Loches itself is a medieval town with a royal château, yet refreshingly free of the bigger crowds found elsewhere in the valley.

These are the scenes I look forward to sharing every Wednesday.

Towns & Villages - Boussay in Southern Touraine

Boussay — a quiet corner of southern Touraine.

Today we pause in Boussay, a southern Touraine village whose stillness could be from any moment in the past century. Stone houses, gentle lanes and rooftops that curve softly. this is the Tourainie at its most timeless.

In Boussay, history is not declared; it is simply lived. The old stone walls and narrow streets carry the easy calm that defines this part of the Loire Valley.

“Some villages speak softly — Boussay is one of them.”

Monday’s Château — and a bit of prehistory.

Le Grand-Pressigny is one of those Loire Valley villages where history stretches back far beyond the medieval stones that dominate the skyline.

This is also a place where prehistory is never far away. Beside the château stands the Musée de Préhistoire du Grand-Pressigny, one of France’s major prehistoric museums. Before even entering, visitors are greeted by life-size models of prehistoric animals, reminders that this quiet corner of Touraine was once inhabited thousands of years before castles or villages appeared.

The contrast between medieval fortress and prehistoric past gives Le Grand-Pressigny a character unlike anywhere else in the Loire Valley. Some more recent history here.

On the streets of Touraine - in Langeais.

Street scene in Langeais with historic buildings and medieval château tower rising above the rooftops in Touraine

In Langeais, history never feels very far away. Around Place Pierre de Brosse, everyday life continues beneath the shadow of the old château tower, where centuries of stories seem to rise above the rooftops.

Walking the streets here, you notice how naturally the medieval and the modern sit together. Langeais is often remembered for its château and royal history, but the streets themselves are just as memorable. They carry that unmistakable Touraine atmosphere, calm, lived-in and quietly timeless.
