Saturday on the streets of Touraine...Rue du Four Banal in Le Grand-Pressigny.

Autumn trees and old stone houses along Rue du Four Banal in Le Grand-Pressigny.

Rue du Four Banal climbs through the old heart of Le Grand-Pressigny towards the château, lined with old stone houses and shutters. In October, the autumn colours add another layer to the street, with the bright blue sky drawing the eye towards the end of the lane.

Find a garden for an autumn walk.

Autumn foliage and garden path in the Jardin René Boylesve, Descartes.

The Jardin public René Boylesve in Descartes occupies the former enclosure of a fortified château, with a rose garden in the old moat and a varied collection of mature trees. Beside the Creuse, it is a pleasant place to take a walk and enjoy the changing colours of autumn.

As the temperatures drop, there is still no better excuse for a walk than finding a good garden. So wrap up well, put on your walking shoes and make for the nearest one. In Descartes, the Jardin René Boylesve provides plenty to explore among the trees and autumn colour.

Hope your week ends well and it's followed by a lovely weekend.

From morning mist to afternoon light.

Morning view across autumn trees to Le Grand-Pressigny church and rooftops.

Yesterday looking from the château across the treetops, the church of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais rises above the rooftops of Le Grand-Pressigny. The changing light transforms the same view as the day progresses, from a misty morning to a much clearer afternoon scene.

If windows could talk.

Two weathered stone windows with open grey wooden shutters and wrought-iron balconies on an old limestone building in Preuilly-sur-Claise; a carved scissors-like emblem sits above the lower arched window.

These two windows in Preuilly-sur-Claise have clearly seen a few centuries.

Weathered limestone, peeling grey shutters left open to the street, delicate wrought-iron balconies and right above the lower arched window, a small carved emblem that looks like a pair of scissors.

In the days when every trade announced itself with a carved or painted sign, scissors were the classic mark of a tailor. So the quiet question inevitably arises: did a tailleur once live and work behind these shutters?

The building doesn’t shout its history. It just stands there, slightly tired, slightly elegant, letting the light fall across the peeling paint and the old ironwork.Between them, the scissors remain a small, almost forgotten signature from a time when the tools of a trade were carved into the stone itself.

“Through every window, the Loire Valley breathes — calm, patient, and quietly luminous.”

Villandry under an autumn sky.

Château de Villandry overlooking its formal gardens in autumn.

Villandry is perhaps best known for the precise geometry of its Renaissance-style gardens, but they are never quite the same from one season to the next. In October, the colours begin to change and the garden takes on a distinctly autumnal character, while the château remains the constant backdrop.

Bon lundi.

“Each château tells a story — of kings, of artists and of the dream of France itself.”
