On the streets of Touraine in Loches

Rue du Château on the left and rue des Fossés Saint-Ours on the right, viewed from the top of the Porte Royale in Loches

Sunday, 24 March 2024

Mon banc dominical / My Sunday Bench - no frills but thrills at Loches.

On the terrace of the Porte Royale (13th-15th centuries), in Loches which offers an exceptional panoramic view of the town.

Many visitors to Loches are not aware of the access to the top of the gate from the gardens of the 'Musee Lansyer' the former home of Emmanuel Lansyer, a 19th century landscape painter.(worth a visit also) and miss out on the views.

Well worth the climb.

Monday's chateau...Château de Betz

The current castle in the small village of Betz-le-Chateau in Southern Touraine dates from the 15th century and has fairly unique accessible underground caves which were designed to protect the residents in the event of attacks, They also has an underground well allowing them to stay there longer during a siege. The castle has had major restoration work done recently where the machicolations were reinstated and the underground caves made more secure.

Below is a view before the restoration work.

Wednesday is for windows...Le Petit-Pressigny

We often admire this painted window at Les Chambres de l'Aigronne in the village of Le Petit-Pressigny in Southern Touraine.
