The town of Chaumont-sur-Loire is dominated by its chateau with the town itself consisting of an an unremarkable 2 km stretch of buildings along the south bank of the river Loire.
It has a popular cycle path along the riverbank and during high season boat trips are offered on traditional craft of the region.
Their is an entrance to the chateau on the riverside road but using this entails a not so leisurely climb up a steep driveway. The entrance at the rear of the chateau offers easier access to the garden festival and plenty of car parking space.
The town offers one of the rare crossings of the river Loire with the next bridges being at Amboise to the west and Blois to the east.
